Syria Mosque - Pittsburgh

Genesis have built their reputation dazzling and amazing the audience.

A sold-out crowd has arrived on the last Saturday night (Editor's note: November 30 1974, the world tour of the Lamb was started only 10 days) the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh crowd that discovered the new rock opera, in a double-album Genesis "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway ", a production that is a smart but with a really strange story. But this does not seduce, nor the concert is fascinating.

It 'hard to imagine a show that includes the retro-projection on three screens, more explosions and clouds of smoke, but this is fascinating, especially when the sound system and complex lighting systems are perfect .

But weakness is found mainly in music and trying, without enthusiasm, however, that the group was on stage looking like the usual, sparkling, Genesis we knew, did not succeed in this concert. The singer Peter Gabriel , for example, did some of his usual costume changes, but much less than what the public expected. In most of the time was wearing blue jeans, a T-shirt and a leather jacket to personify the character Rael, the central figure of the work. In the story, Rael is swallowed by a huge cloud and darkness descends on New York City.

When he wakes, he goes through a long series of terrible adventures, including being trapped in the caves, wrapped in a cocoon, a spiral staircase going up and being in a room with 32 ports of which only one door out, falls into a ravine, and after making his first romantic experience unnecessarily tries to tell how he made love with numbers.

To help the public to understand that the show would have seen, a program of 2 pages has been placed on each seat so that fans could read the synopsis of such a long story. These notes would have helped to familiarize fans with the plot, which was performed in its entirety of 90 minutes, but could not help in making the familiar music. "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is an album very recently, and it is certain that many of the fans had never heard before any notes.

While the group is based on solid foundations, first of all one of their early songs, "I Know What I Like", ill unknown material that played last Saturday maintained for public participation to a minimum. Although the concert was appreciated by most, has been loved by few. Among the most successful things "Counting Out Time", a song normal and catchy.

One of the few appearances of Gabriel in costume, that of a grotesque figure, distorted, all yellow emerging from a cylinder of transparent pink plastic, makes sure to give a touch of individuality to the famous Genesis the standard format for this kind of concert.

The three explosions, broken during the show were all taken place at the right time, but it was enough to arouse the attention of some fans.

The beginning of the show across the Syria Mosque filling with the smoke of dry ice, and it was so thick that you could not see the balcony of the main floor, this was very promising, but was never really that in continuing the concert.

The rear projection screens, for example, was nothing more than a collection of colored slides. If at this stage there had been some other group, not the Genesis, then it could also be an entertaining evening. If the Genesis would come here just a couple of months, when the new work sounded familiar to most people, would have been much better, or at least you could watch the show with some objectivity.

But it was like it was a concert made for a very enjoyable evening, but unsatisfactory.
