enigma that brings us to Mrs. Balme's Dance

Enigma machine to encrypt messages
For years he has fantasized about a place, the so-called milestone, the milestone from where they left the streets of the world who have seen almost 1,700 concerts, Genesis (not counting the show of solo) in 40-year career at DOC "GENESIS".
That site, known as Mrs. Balme's Dance, was briefly mentioned by Armando Gallo in his book "The Evolution of a Rock Band" of 1978, but stopped as he heard tell by Irene Allen, the mother of Peter Gabriel.
"Our neighbors did a dance for their children at home and our guys went to play" . Finish.
The date? The 23 September 1969 to Chobham, the village where Peter and his family lived, and a compensation layer for those times: £ 25 for a show! When the boys were put under contract by Tony Stratton Smith's Charisma the for the following year, the agreed fee was £ 25 a week but due to John Mayhew, who made the bully in interviews was reduced to only 15 pounds.
So Armando Gallo writes "neighbors ... 23 September 1969 ... 25 pounds " and also assumed the setlist for that concert. beautiful and great if it was true, and maybe it was really true:

Set 1:
In the Beginning
The Serpent
Going Out to Get You
Masochistic Man
Stumble (Cover)
Black Sheep (Cover)
Visions of Angels

Set 2:

September 4:

But the place and the house which took place on "Mrs. Balme's Dance" still exists today?

The survey part of this question and the answer is interlocutory: why do not we know nothing has been done to find out, in addition to those simple questions posed by the mother of Peter Gallo almost 35 years ago.

I would assume that being unlikely to apply for and receive a specific response by members of the 1969 Genesis , news on Balme's Dance I must ask those who lived in Chobham that year, maybe someone will remember something of Balme's Dance. This track proves successful in part because public figures of Chobham who agree to be interviewed are too young to remember the 1969 or, worse still, in those years lived in Chobham or were not even born. But these contacts open other roads in the survey.

I just have to contact the parents of Peter, they are both alive and still vigorous even whether of old age: Ralph Parton Gabriel was born in 1912, then 98 years old, while Edith Irene Allen was born in 1921. Ben 89. And best wishes to you both!

This faint trace says that over the years the site of Balme's Dance was the seat of Sunday School, something that has to do with a school for catechists.
from the Church of St.Lawrence, namely the Reverend Andrew Body that the pastoral care. Through various adventures come in contact with the Reverend.

But he is a few years ago that carries out its mission in Chobham. It seems that the skein s'ingarbugli until I get his confidence to get in touch with the elderly couple by the Rev. Gabriel Body.

Sunday after Sunday, after Mass, the Rev. exposes my questions to Ralph & Irene. And the answers were not long in coming. Accurate, detailed and concise at the same time. Balme's Dance still exists.

But our story must begin many years before, just since 1941.

An episode of war that was brought to the screen of the cinema ( the film U-571 2000, director Jonathan Mostow , based on the novel of the same name Robert Harris ) , an event that according Winston Churchill, British prime minister in the years' 40, has changed the fate of the Second World War Atlantic: the discovery of code ENIGMA .

Operation PRIMROSE

Operation PRIMROSE was the name given to a pair of military operations and intelligence during the years 1940-1941 the British navy and to apprehend a working example of the German Enigma cipher machine , the possession of which would have greatly facilitated and greatly shortened the hard work of decoding of German messages encrypted by the large group of cryptographers working in Bletchley Park in England under Ultra .

The first attempt

The British Admiralty was to capture at all costs a intact U-Boot to get the largest possible number of ' information for the ongoing challenge in the Atlantic, which in essence meant to capture the latest model of the Enigma machine cipher supplied to the men 's Admiral Dönitz : This would provide the Intelligence Service weapon winning the battle of the Atlantic.

The first occasion happened in World War II just started, the February 12, 1940, with the capture U-Boot 33: The Enigma machine was found yes, but completely sabotaged by Germans themselves.

The second attempt and its success

A new plan devised by Captain JRS Haines, assistant director of the 'Operational Intelligence Centre , to approach the German weather ships had better luck: it was possible to get hold of a Enigma machine, even if type ship, the ship weather KMS Munich, along with valuable instruction manual and the equally valuable weather code ( Wetterkurzschlussel ). ( note: it should be remembered that it was the custom of the U-boat fleet periodically send commands to home the weather data encrypted with Enigma).

L ' May 8 1941 the ' U-Boot 110 sighted a large convoy of 38 vessels called OB-318 with troops, ammunition, and arms to the Egyptian front, which was en route near the ' Iceland. Under the command of German submarine there was Fritz Julius Lemp , already known to have sunk in the conflict has just begun, the passenger Athena, when he was in command U-30. The next day he was joined by U-201 Schnee Lieutenant . The two agreed to attack the large convoy, each on one side.

The U-110 fired four torpedoes, but before he could break the contact was identified by HMS Aubret which began the launch of depth and U-110 dived at full speed.

Meanwhile joined the hunt the Bulldog and the USS Broadway : depth bombs fell very close and damage Lemp forced to order the rapid emergence .

destroyer HMS Bulldog

The submarine was initially subjected to fire of destroyers but at this point entered the game the captain of a frigate John Baker Cresswell, who, remembering the episode studied at the academy, the German codes to capture ' German cruiser Magdeburg in 191 4, sensed a great opportunity that it is.

Baker Cresswell ordered the immediate cease-fire and prepared a team of collision. Lemp meanwhile had to abandon the submarine and her, realizing the intentions of adversaries, had ordered the destruction or sabotage everything that was possible, but something did not go the right way.

The Bulldog sent a squad of eight men under the command of Lieutenant David Balme Edward, who rushed on board U-110. Here is a vivid testimony of Balme:

David Edward Balme photos of 1940
"... The telegraph my team went to the radio station located immediately ahead on the right control room. It was in perfect condition as it was not apparently made no attempt to destroy codes or equipment. Here were found the rough draft signs, books of accounts and general correspondence, as if the radio station had been used by an administrative office. The cipher machine was found here and seemed to have been in operation when it was abandoned. The general form of this instrument is that of a typewriter, the telegraph keys and beats particular results are sent to the picture ... "

Failure to sabotage and then allowed him to capture the Enigma machine cipher , manual and tables for the positioning of the rotors, in perfect condition.

The surviving German crew was picked up by ' Aubret and Broadway and immediately sent below deck, so that he could not see Balme team to board the U-110 ; among them there was no trace of the captain Lemp and his disappearance remains a mystery . The British boarding team made several trips between the submarine and the German Bulldog taking all the material deemed appropriate. The U-110 was made to tow but the next day, after traveling for 17 hours, sank due to the significant damage caused by the explosion of depth charges. The accidental sinking further facilitate the maintenance of absolute secrecy of the affair: disappeared because the test more difficult to conceal .

The commander of the flotilla John Baker Cresswell ordered total blackout crew and demanded the strictest of confidence. The Bulldog returned to base English Scapa Flow, with the insignia of battle showing the sinking of enemy submarine ( and his capture! ) and this will be the official version for over twenty years.

Capture U-boat U-110

It is good to point out that the Admiralty, in relation to 'goal of capturing a U-boat intact, only then will understand the great importance of the capture of secret documents and Enigma cipher machine of the latest model. The operational advantage for the 'Operational Intelligence Centre became so basic, allowing decryption of U-boat radio traffic on the network of the Kriegsmarine called Hydra.

The convoys were later diverted from the routes at risk and at the same time the German submarines sunk and worship located. This operational advantage will be maintained until the beginning of the year 1942, when the introduction of Triton variation in the coding system for the German U-boat fleet prevent any decryption of radio messages until the end of December the same year.

The story of Ct. Bulldog and U-110 only begin to 1966 filter the initial reports, but the whole affair was evident in its completeness only after the start of declassification of secret documents about Ultra Secret occurred in the seventies.

David Edward Balme who was then just 21 years ( was born in Kensington in 1920), lieutenant, he commanded the German submarine collision capturing the U-110 cipher machine ENIGMA -message!

After the war David Balme will be awarded the Military Cross for this, personally by King George VI of England (the father of ' Current Queen Elizabeth), and with a large board (that's 25 pounds of compensation for the Genesis to be derived from this income?).

Contrary to the words quoted by Peter Gabriel to Paul Russell "... our neighbors Balme lived before us ..." it is evident that the distance between the houses Gabriel-Balme is significant: neglecting the rural route (400 meters ) if you follow the paved road that goes from villa Gabriel ( Deep Pool ) to Station Road and turning to Philpot Lane at this point we have covered 800 meters ! Other than "... .. in front of us."

As more ...

What happened on that Tuesday, September 23, 1969 Garth House in the garden of the house Balme and first public concert of Genesis ( T. Banks, P. Gabriel, J. Mayhew, A. Phillips, M. Rutherford ) will be what will tell us soon Anthony Balme, a man of the world and professionally engaged in various activities that take him far and breadth of the planet.

Genesis (s) of Light in motion

In the thirtieth anniversary of the "light that moves" ( Vari * Lite) with this article retrace the steps that have led to the idea, the creation and the use by Genesis, the pioneers of Vari * Lite as well as owners of the company that builds them and sells them.

The story of how the Vari * Lite has been designed is shrouded in romance and even mystery. The idea is not new, however, comes from a working group to Showcar (Dallas company, active in supplying audio and lighting for the show business world of rock and roll) that is imposed to resolve the problem of reducing the weight of the lights for lighting the stage, the so-called PAR. Those were heavy reflectors, made of steel, trucks for transporting and served whole.

This was certainly the topic of discussion when the sanctum-sanctorum of the company Showcar met for a casual lunch at their favorite meeting in Dallas, a barbecue restaurant called Salih (Solly's today).

Under the chairmanship of Jack Calmes, Inc. a Showcar had thrived especially in the '70s, establishing itself as a leader in supplying audio and lighting, the regulars were Three Dog Night, Led Zeppelin, James Taylor and ZZ Top.

But towards the end of the decade a wave of British society begins to produce, Aluminium time, and variable-light reflector PAR 1kW, so that the Showcar begins to believe that the lighting department is redundant, rather it is assumed to eliminate that line of business. Thus, the new CEO Rusty Brutsche decided to "disengage" from the division Showcar "light" sub-contracting the business to an independent company, the Showlights Eric Pearce.
And so, in September 1980, the team Showcar, and dined at the restaurant Salih, considered the hypothesis. There were Brutsche, CEO of showcar, Jack Maxson, audio engineer and console designer, Jim Bornhorst , technician lights, Tom Littrell (which later became manager of the emerging companies and PR Vari-Lite), and Tom Walsh .

Along with technical Brooks and Taylor John Covington, the team had already started working on the color change for the spotlight PAR 64, who was the reasoning behind it was that you could hang lights metallic structures, lights that change color.
The first attempt, in which the Vari * Lite presumably were cylinders with pneumatic movement, a sort of traffic lights, fluids and dyes to try to paint the light, it proved useless. But with the beginning the new decade (1980) the concept of light that changes color automatically was becoming technically feasible, because of two new technologies, dichroic glass, which have made a richer color gamut than the gel, and metal halide lamps that produced a greater light output compared to incandescent light sources used at that time and were much more cumbersome for the same power.
Jim Bornhorst enthusiastically began to work at once, combining these two new concepts in a single solution. Brooks and Taylor Tom Walsh, who had worked on projects lighting control on behalf of Showcar in the past, with focus on the development of a controller for this new device while John Coviello is dedicated to the system analog supply. In the air there was a feeling of supreme optimism.
But the cathartic moment in that room was when Jack Maxson said a phrase which has become by now immortal " with two more engines in the light will move . The diners were soon caught up and excited by a light color-changing and moving.
Only 12 weeks later, in December 1980 , and after consultation with dozens of catalogs, shot hobby shops and other available sources, Bornhorst, Walsh, Taylor and Covington had created the prototype of a light that moves and a controller to handle it. The Zero VL or VL0 , as was well known, was born.
The prototype VL0
The team that invented the Vari * Lite
Customers favorites, and faithful to time, the Showcar were Genesis . The English advances regarding pedigree, having attended private schools, be up to the limits of experimentation in performance art, and constantly looking for cutting-edge technology means that Vari * Lite is ready for their next world tour to promote their upcoming album, Abacab .
the same month (December 1980 ) is arranged a meeting between Brutsche and Bornhorst, members of the band and their manager Tony Smith in the old farmhouse (dating from around 1450) THE FARM at Chiddingfold, Surrey , where the band rehearsed and recorded.
before defining the meeting, Alan Owen , Light Designer of the band for many years, wanted to do a field test and was placed on a plant VL0 with some reflectors to simulate traditional PAR a "sunset."
The appliance is connected to a beam of the barn and the console was programmed to perform two simple and rudimentary color-changing effects.
Genesis I was so impressed that an order was made to purchase showcar, on the spot. Tony Smith coined the name of the company, Vari-Lite , and at the same time offering the two men of considerable Showcar and endorses a check for the development of 55 Vari * Lite equipment that would acquire Genesis. [ NB Vari-Lite is the name of the company and Vari * Lite is the product name, brand .]

Par

The band members, Phil Collins , Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks took equal shares in the company while Tony Smith became the sole shareholder in Vari-Lite . And to this day they still have four partners of the company.
If the band was excited and euphoric, Bornhorst still had reservations. He felt that some improvements would be needed, especially to the system of rotating mirror.
color-changing technology would have been impossible to duplicate this feature and made it even more attractive investment.
While the product design and returned to the laboratory, Walsh and Taylor worked hard to develop a controller directed to a pre-programmed play but encrypted. In short, to move the Vari * Lite according to a script set in advance and stored on hard disk of a computer.
lights (fitted with an arc lamp with reflector Mk350) have been redesigned for vertical attack and was made the possibility of 'choreography' where all the lights moving in unison.

DEBUTS SPANISH
The second part of the legend Vari-Lite was being battled out in an arena that has seen the Vari * Lite moving long before the stadium . The Plaza de Toros in Barcelona , September 25, 1981. It was the opening date of the world tour of Genesis: "Abacab."
Plaza de Toros in Barcelona, \u200b\u200bSeptember 25, 1981

E 'was here that the 40 Vari * Lite Series 100s, were actually the prototypes of the real VL1 VL1 since the debut in the 1982 world tour, plus a computerized control system, made their debut. The remaining 15 Vari * Lite were kept turned off and needed to replace those that eventually fail. Alan Owen was Light Designer Tom Littrell and programmer / operator, with Taylor in the role of assistant .

All this technological innovation transported to the slaughterhouse disguised as an amphitheater for the bulls.
Who was in the audience at this opening concert remembers the unforgettable spectacle when they moved in unison several robotic devices under remote control, irrevocably changing the world of Light Designer and its color palette After such a way that would never be the same again.
The smoke machines that created the fog, combined with the changing colors of the VL generated whenever the roars from the audience.

Exactly, what was the VL1? The answer is: a spotlight, with variation in light intensity, with a steady light, which changes color of the light beam, the beam form and movement skills in a 2-dimensional . It was a machine with a cooling fan but the engines were reduced to noise.

The operator / programmer Tom Littrell recalls vividly: " We learned to love that sound because it meant that there would come that month's salary. But we knew that the noise would not be admissible in theater, opera and it was legitimate to consider to get quieter products, such as the VL5 .
Littrell admitted that the system was created in response to the fact that some groups have been on tour with over 1,000 lights , loaded onto trucks, transported, assembled and disassembled, all in one day. "The draft horses would be in rock'n'roll PAR 64. We're just trying to get the" bang "from each light .
He added: "Vari-Lite Inc. is the company that revolutionized the concept of the show in the world of rock, television and theater. They have been re-designed and has changed the way we see them."
The equipment that has given the green light industry was moving VL1. " There were no other lights in motion before our VL1, but Vari-Lite was the first company to take seriously the mission, and what was then the current technology in electronics, optics and color filters, and turn it into a practical and functional lighting system. "
The long history of Showcar, his experience in concerts, production shows and on tour, he said, gave the developers a very precise vision of what the system had to be, as it should operate in the real world.
Newer models today, you can plan better, are quieter and have more features, but as a classic car, the VL original is still there, in place of a pioneer.
summary, Littrell said, "I believe that Vari-Lite automated lighting was an important development in the memory card and the phase adjustment control in the pre-ignition. Artists do not have changed the way they write or perform the show because of the progress Vari-Lite, but have had a huge return in the lighting for their show. "

AL side of the Atlantic

More or less simultaneously, the Telescan Mk1 was built by the French company Cameleon , based in Montreuil from 1977 . This automated moving mirror was presented at the Paris fair Discom in 1981. After the Mk1 was launched in the market, however ignorant, French, has rapidly taken its place, earned, on tour rock'n'roll (oddly, the Genesis will use it only later.)
With the passage of time the classic Telescan MkIII , with its 1200W HMI lamp, it becomes a standard, Cameleon had clear ideas and tool combines all the functions with the versatility of analogue addressable lighting.
Telescan scanner-touring/luci became the forerunner of the moving mirror, extending the range up to MkIV and all ' MKV . But it was not the first. During dell'decennio (1980) in the United Kingdom other inventors have been busy on similar projects.
Peter Wynne Willson had already designed the system Pancani mirrored furniture in 1980, founding the Pancani Ltd the following year, and starting to manufacture, and marketing, the eponymous single system remote controlled mirror. Of this model were sold thousands of copies worldwide, and generated the birth of an entire sector lighting automatic moving mirror.
Pancani was a computerized system that has become the first device to move (and store locations) PAR 64 lamps, which were accurate and cheap, without the aggravation of a motorized system. Compatible with most of PAR lamps and spots 1kW Pinspot has provided the versatility of the PAR 36, but with the intensity of the flood of 1000 W.
Pancani could operate with the joystick , located next to the main console lights, attached with a system of mirrors that fit the majority of lighthouses. It was ideal for applications where accurate positioning and manual headlight was a problem.
The initial system (which has evolved considerably) was composed of a handheld controller with a joystick that could simultaneously drive two cars moving mirror. Using a splitter is coming up to a maximum of eight lights moved at the same time, all the alternative movements the joystick. Moreover, the system could be controlled automatically.
Autoscan was the successor, which is manufactured by Birmingham Causes & Effects (the company that weaned their young Steve Warren ). The company had developed the revolutionary idea to install a Par (a lighthouse) in a 2-axis motion system, servo-controlled glass fiber, or a computerized PAR 64 in motion and has memory.
the same period, Charlie Payton was developing a system of moving lights PAR, using Belden, a lighting system then developed by PALS Strand.

The Cerebrum Lighting deploy both Pancani that Autoscan , selling the first Autoscan for a tour of Gary Numan . Time after Autoscan is been given to Peter Stringfellow , during the show of his in the transfiguration Talk Of The Town, and Causes & Effects was falling into disrepair. While Autoscan was short-lived, the evolution of Pancani continued. At Light & Sound Show of 1984, showed the new system Cerebrum Pancani based on micro-computer. Next to this was presented "Colour System 2" , which allowed control of both direction and color of the light beam on a cluster of 16 lights.
Pancani enjoyed his glory to Camden Palace in 1981, his first outing with praise by the experts. But when the Italian began the business of moving mirrors, with products such as robots Coemar the Pancani was on borrowed time.
Since then, as the same Peter Wynne Willson admits, the development of complex and revolutionary stepper motor had exhausted its driving force.
At a time when the names of these devices have begun to infiltrate into the vocabulary of the field of "direct", the application of kinetic lighting articulate and has entered a new phase with the forward march , and it quickly took off.
